We recommend deep cleaning your carpet every 6 to 12 months, but life has a way of making messes that don’t stick to a schedule. Whether it’s muddy paws, juice spills, or mystery crumbs, your carpet sees it all—and then some. The truth is, how often you should clean your carpet really depends on your household’s unique rhythm.

Carpet Care for Pet Owners

If you have furry family members living indoors, we suggest deep cleaning your carpet at least every six months. Carpets and area rugs are great at trapping pet dander deep within their fibers. While this initially helps with air quality, simply walking across the carpet, or even vacuuming can stir those particles back into the air.

Pet dander consists of tiny flecks of skin shed by animals with fur or feathers. (Yes, even your bird has dander!) Because of its microscopic size, dander easily settles deep into carpets and rugs. And here’s something even less pleasant: dried saliva, urine, or dust from feces can also flake off and become embedded in carpet fibers.

While routine vacuuming is helpful, it can’t reach everything hidden deep within the carpet. Deep cleaning is the only way to truly and thoroughly wash your carpets and rugs. This isn’t just important for cleanliness—it’s especially critical for those with pet dander allergies.

How often should you clean your carpet?

Most carpets should be deep cleaned every 6 to 12 months, but homes with pets, kids, or high foot traffic may need more frequent cleanings to stay fresh and healthy. How often should you clean your carpet? Man with dog on floor.

Keeping Carpets Clean with Children at Home

Kids often spend a lot of time on carpets—playing, napping, doing crafts, or simply rolling around. Naturally, this means frequent spills and messes that can seep deep into the fibers. It’s essential to keep these spaces as clean as possible.

According to the American Lung Association, children are more vulnerable to indoor pollutants, especially from carpets, both because they spend more time on them and because they’re more likely to put their hands in their mouths. Deep cleaning more frequently can help remove these hidden contaminants and reduce the chance of exposure.

For best results, we recommend using a professional-grade machine—like the rental models we offer—to ensure a deep and effective clean.

Smoking and Odors

Pet smells, cooking odors, and everyday living can cause carpets to absorb unwanted odors. If your space doesn’t smell fresh even after vacuuming, it’s likely time for a deep clean.

Homes with indoor smokers need even more frequent attention. Tobacco smoke contains harmful gases and particles, including known carcinogens. These toxins can settle into soft surfaces like carpet, rugs, and upholstery, and over time, they may be re-emitted into the air.

According to a 2002 study—and reaffirmed by a 2023 study published by ACS Publications—these toxic compounds don’t just stay trapped; they can recombine into new, harmful substances. Even non-smokers in the home can be affected. In homes with heavy smokers, deep cleaning every three months is recommended. For homes with light to moderate smokers, every six months is sufficient. Deep cleaning helps remove these

Carpet Maintenance

Carpets naturally trap dander allergens like pollen and pet dander. Regular deep cleaning helps reduce these dust allergens and help minimize symptoms for those with sensitivities.

It also helps extend the life of your carpet. Without proper cleaning, dirt and debris can wear down carpet fibers, leading to matting, fading, and a dingy appearance, especially in high-traffic areas like hallways, entryways, and living rooms.

While a yearly deep clean is a good general rule, every home is different. Factors like pets, kids, dander allergies, smoking, and foot traffic all play a role in how often you should deep clean your carpets. Choose a schedule that suits your lifestyle and home environment.

How Often Should You Clean Your Carpet? The answer depends on your lifestyle, but whether it’s every six months or more often, keeping your carpets fresh and clean is key to a healthier, more comfortable home. No matter what life throws at your floors—pets, kids, or everyday wear and tear—Rug Doctor is here to help. How to Reduce Trapped Irritants in Your Home

Carpets add warmth and comfort to your home, but did you know they also act as one of the biggest air filters? Carpets and allergies can go hand in hand when irritants such as pet dander, pollen, and dust become trapped deep within carpet fibers. These common non-living allergens already exist in your home or can be tracked in from shoes, pets, or open windows. Deep cleaning your carpets and rugs could help alleviate allergy symptoms.

Regular vacuuming is essential, but it’s not always enough to remove deeply embedded allergens. Even carpets that are vacuumed frequently can still trap irritants within their fibers.

How Carpet Types Affect Allergies

High-pile carpets, like shag or frieze rugs, have long and loose fibers, creating more spaces for allergens to cling to and mold to grow. In contrast, low-pile carpets have a shorter, tighter weave, which makes it harder for allergens to settle, but not impossible. Dust, pollen, and dirt can still get trapped within the fibers, contributing to allergy symptoms.

Tips for Minimizing Allergens in Your Home

  • Vacuum at least once a week – Regular vacuuming helps maintain a cleaner surface and can help reduce allergen buildup.
  • Reduce humidity levels – Lowering humidity can help maintain a comfortable home environment.
  • Keep windows closed on high-pollen days – Limit outdoor exposure by keeping windows shut when pollen levels are elevated.

We Recommend Using Professional Carpet Cleaning Solution

America is a nation of do-it-yourselfers — even when it comes to cleaning their carpets. Some go as far as to concoct their own cleaning solution, using a special recipe of ingredients they have around the house. Is that a good idea?

We strongly recommend against it, based on our analysis of the common reasons people give for making their own carpet cleaning solution. Let’s look at the key points of arguments for homemade solutions:

Argument #1: Homemade solutions are cheaper.

While the per-gallon cost of “a little vinegar and water” will certainly appear cheaper than the typical carpet cleaning formula, the actual cost may be much higher over the long run. Why? Because using a homemade formula may be doing damage that is not visible to the eye.

For example, one or two cleanings using basic household detergents or cleaning methods can actually strip away any protective coatings (such as StainProtect® Protector) that your carpet may have. Over time, this loss of stain protection can leave your carpet vulnerable to dirt, stains, and wear. In fact, it may void the manufacturer’s warranty on your carpet, leaving you with no recourse when damage occurs.

Argument #2: Homemade solutions are safer for the environment.

Our Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® cleaning solutions are earth friendly formulas with biodegradable detergents. They contain no heavy metals, dyes, or optical brighteners.

Argument #3: Homemade solutions clean better.

Most soap products and detergents are better suited to grease removal than carpet cleaning. Due to their chemical composition, they tend to leave behind a sticky residue that actually attracts dirt. That means cleaning with the wrong “recipe” can eventually result in carpets that are more deeply soiled

Even more worrisome, certain combinations of typical household chemicals can be very dangerous. The ammonia in some cleaning solutions can react with chlorine (which is often found in chlorine bleach or some toilet bowl cleaners) to produce chlorine gas, which is very dangerous and can be fatal.

In any case, the result you’re most likely after—a cleaner, healthier home—may actually be more elusive if you turn to “home recipes” for carpet cleaning. Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® cleaning solutions are designed for homes with kids and pets, so you do not have to worry about “healthier” cleaning solution alternatives.

Professional solutions really do clean better.

It’s right there in the science. Every year, BISSELL reinvests in our state-of-the-art research department, always striving to find the safest, most effective and most efficient carpet cleaning methodologies. Based on a thorough understanding of the “chemistry of cleaning,” our team of scientists has created a lineup of carpet cleaning formulas that have demonstrated their ability to clean better than homemade cleaning formulas.
Typically, each of our formulas contain a combination of 8-10 core ingredients that are designed to maximize the formula’s performance. Each ingredient plays its own role, and the interaction of these ingredients helps to optimize your cleaning results.

So, when it comes to deep cleaning your carpet, it’s important to use our upright cleaning solutions that are designed to go along with a Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® rental carpet cleaner. Our professional-strength deep cleaning solutions are designed specifically for our carpet cleaner rentals. We offer a variety of machine cleaning solutions, including Max Advanced, Oxy, Pet and Refresh formulas.

The bottom line? To maximize your results, we recommend that you always use only our carpet cleaning solutions. Just choose the one that is best suited to your needs.

Carpet is one of the biggest investments in your home. As carpet can cost as much as $9.00 per square foot, carpet replacement is an expense that most people want to avoid for as long as possible. Keeping your carpet clean and free from dirt, grime, stains, and dust will keep your carpet looking new longer and also increase its lifespan. Our Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® experts put together these six simple ways to keep your carpet clean to increase the life of your carpet and protect your investment.

6 Simple Ways to Keep Carpet Clean

  1. Stop Dirt and Grime at the Door.
The easiest way to keep your carpet and rugs cleaner longer is by keeping dirt and grime from getting on them in the first place. Be proactive and utilize door mats. Use outdoor and indoor mats, which work together to reduce the amount of dirt tracked into your house. Encourage family and visitors to wipe their shoes before entering your home.
  2. Ditch the Shoes.
Want to go a step beyond the doormat? We suggest you stop wearing shoes in the house. A simple Google search shows all the gross stuff shoes track into your home and on to your carpet: bacteria, chemicals, dirt… even fecal matter! Eww! Your carpet and rugs act like a magnet, collecting everything you track in and transferring it all to your floor. And let’s not overlook the wear and tear shoes cause to your carpet and floors. Shoes can literally grind in dirt, damaging carpet fibers and resulting in matting. Don’t be afraid to put a sign up for visitors to remind them “no shoes allowed.” It’s your carpet, and you have the right to protect it!
  3. Change or Clean Your Air Filters.
The more dust and particles removed by your air filter, the less will fall on your carpet (and tables, chairs, bed, etc). Did you know a dirty air filter can cause your HVAC system to work extra hard and use more energy? That’s not good for your furnace or your wallet. It’s recommended you change your air filters every 90 days; and if you have a dog or cat in the home, change them every 60 days.
  4. Vacuum Regularly.
This seems like a no-brainer, but something as simple as vacuuming is the easiest and most effective way to keep your carpet and rugs clean. Vacuuming has a significant impact on the cleanliness of your home, the air you breathe, and the life of your carpet and rugs. Aim to vacuum once a week and increase the frequency in high-traffic or pet areas. And don’t forget to check your vacuum bag or filter regularly. If the filter is clogged or the bag is too full, the vacuum loses suction.
  5. Treat Stains as Quickly as Possible.
The longer a stain sets in, the harder it is to remove. Always blot the stain – never rub! – using a white paper towel or cloth. Beware of using a cloth with color, otherwise you risk transferring dye and creating a bigger problem. Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® offers various spot and stain sprays that remove stains and odors at the source. Professional Urine Eliminator is designed to remove pet stains like urine, help eliminate odors like urine and skunk and it discourages remarking. Professional Oxy Spot + Pre-treat instantly removes colored stains like wine and loosens embedded dirt. No matter your needs, Rug Doctor has a cleaning solution for you.
  6. Give your Carpets a Professional-Grade Deep Cleaning at Least Once Every Year.
Although vacuuming is important, it only removes dirt from the surface of your carpet. A professional-level clean gets deep into the carpet fibers, pulling out all the gross stuff you can’t see. Rent a Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® deep carpet cleaner to deep clean it yourself and save at least $300 versus hiring a carpet cleaning service. Doing it yourself is easier than you think! The average room only takes about 20 minutes. Here at Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® Rental, we know that a little background music can go a long way toward getting more cleaning done—and making it fun at the same time. We’re talking about a cleaning playlist: songs that inspire you to dance around the living room while vacuuming. Trust us, it will help get your to-do list done quicker.

Don’t love music? Try playing audio books of the latest bestsellers or that classic you just love to read over and over. Listening to an audio book while cleaning is a great way to multitask and keep your brain engaged.

The key to creating a fun cleaning playlist is to focus on upbeat music that keeps you energized. Many people prefer the lively tempo of pop music, but classics work well, too. If you love dancing around the house to Beethoven while dusting, go ahead and use it for your playlist! It’s all about what makes you feel like you’re having fun, rather than completing a chore.

Music-streaming sites like Spotify* and Pandora** make it easy to create a playlist that you can listen to through your computer or smartphone.*** Make it as long as you like, but keep in mind you might not want it to repeat while you’re cleaning. So, try to figure out how long your cleaning routine typically takes. Pick songs that you love, but if you’re stumped on where to start, here are some of our favorites:

  • “Work” by Rihanna and Drake
  • “Dancing Queen” by ABBA
  • “Happy” by Pharrell Williams
  • “Start Me Up” by The Rolling Stones
  • “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall & Oates
  • “Only the Good Die Young” by Billy Joel
  • “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” by Beyoncé
  • “Let It Go” by Idina Menzel
  • “My Girl” by The Temptations
  • “Walk Like a Man” by The Four Seasons
  • “Pump Up the Jam” by Technotronic
  • “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie
  • “My Shot” by Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift

Did you know that carpet can help keep pet dander allergens out of the air? It can act like a trap, keeping dust and pollen out of the air we breathe. The Carpet and Rug Institute states, “Simply put, dust, pet dander, and other particles that fall to the carpet stays trapped until it is removed through vacuuming or extraction cleaning.”

Deep cleaning your carpets is a major part of a proper maintenance plan. It is common to deep clean carpets when there are visible stains; however, it is best to maintain the cleanliness of a carpet even if there are no stains visible on the surface. A Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® carpet cleaner and upholstery tool rental can remove spots and stains from carpet and upholstery and refresh soft surfaces to give them a “like new” look and smell.

While appearance and smell are some of the main reasons for deep cleaning carpets, there is another important reason. Carpets that are effectively cleaned cut down on dust and dander allergens. Unlike air filters, carpets are not easily replaced, as it can be very expensive and time-consuming. Vacuuming alone is simply not enough.

An effective way to remove dust, pollen, dander, and other pollutants trapped deep within the carpet fibers is to thoroughly wash and extract with a powerful deep carpet cleaner. Renting a Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® carpet cleaning machine is ideal for washing your carpets without having to hire a carpet cleaning service.

Not only will your carpets smell and look great but a deep carpet cleaning can help improve the air you breathe.  Visit our store locator to find a rental location near you.

Beautiful carpet can be a focal point of your home, but how do you keep it that way? Occasional vacuuming alone, unfortunately, isn’t enough. To keep your carpet looking good for a long time, you need to keep up with regular carpet maintenance. Don’t get intimidated by the word “regular.” Our team has simplified the process to make it manageable, even on the busiest of schedules.

Semi-Annually: Deep Clean

Deep cleaning your carpet periodically throughout the year will help it look great and smell fresh. It’s the best way to remove deep down dirt, dust and dander allergens that normal vacuuming leaves behind. This will help to extend the carpet’s life.  Select Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® cleaning solutions contain StainProtect® protector that apply a safe protective coating to your carpet fibers that help prevent future stains.

Weekly: Vacuum

Vacuuming regularly will allow you to pick up dirt and debris before it works its way deep down into the fibers. You should be using a vacuum on your carpet at least once a week and as many as two times a week for high-traffic areas. For the best results, go slowly and occasionally change direction. When vacuuming heavier traffic areas, go over the area 5-7 times, 3-4 times for lower-traffic areas.

As Needed: Stain Removal

When stains occur, it’s necessary to tackle them as soon as you can. The sooner you treat stains, the better results you’ll have. Use one of our carpet spot and stain removers to spray the area where the stain is, and using a clean, damp towel or cloth, gently work the formula into the area using light, scooping strokes from the edges of the area to the center. Once you reach the center, gently pinch in an upward motion and don’t rub the stain. Wait until the carpet has dried and vacuum over the area to pick up any remaining debris that may be left behind.

Installing or replacing carpet is an expensive investment, which is why it’s so important to properly maintain the carpet you have. Get started by finding your nearest BISSELL® by Rug Doctor® rental location today.

There’s been a lot of talk about what to do when deep cleaning: how to use the machine, which type of carpet cleaning formula is the best for your needs, how to remove stains, the list could go on and on! But today let’s focus on the opposite: what NOT to do!

  1. Not Deep Cleaning at All
Okay, this one is pretty obvious, but the biggest deep cleaning mistake you can make is to not deep clean at all! The benefits of deep cleaning are pretty obvious:
    • Helps remove dander allergens, dirt and stains you can’t reach with normal vacuuming
    • Keeps your carpet looking newer for longer
We recommend deep cleaning your carpets twice a year, more if you have allergies, pets and kids, or in high-traffic areas. This will help keep the job manageable and ensure you see all of the benefits year-round.
  2. Not Using professional carpet cleaning solutions with your rental machine
Invest in your carpet and time with the right cleaning solution. While baking soda and white vinegar are popularly used for cleaning, these should not be used with a carpet cleaning machine.  We recommend sticking with professional cleaning solutions when deep cleaning your carpet. Our formulas work with the machine to deliver the best clean. In many ways, using the right cleaning formula is as important as choosing the right machine. Additionally, using the right formula will ensure you don’t damage the machine and/or your carpet. The bottom line? To maximize your results, we recommend that you use our carpet cleaning solutions. Just choose the one that is best suited to your needs.
  3. Not Using the Machine Properly
Make sure you read and follow the instructions on the machine. Doing so will ensure you get the best clean and help avoid damage to your carpet and home. If you’re concerned about how to use the machine properly, watch our general how to use video find how to use instructions for each machine in our rental support area.

Has the old carpet in your house seen better days? We get it. Nothing in your home gets quite as much wear as the carpeting. Family members and pets walk on it all day, so dirt, grass, and lots of other stuff get tracked in from outside, and food and drinks are dropped by accident. Your poor carpet works hard! A carpet cleaner rental from Rug Doctor® by BISSELL® can help you show your carpet a little love.

Step 1: Vacuum Up Dust & Dirt

To begin reviving carpet, we recommend starting with a clean foundation. Remove furniture from the room or move it out of the way as much as you can, to vacuum the carpet. Vacuum slowly and in opposite directions to try to get the carpet fibers to stand up. Also, pay special attention as you vacuum along the edges of the room to capture all loose dust, dirt, hair and debris.

Step 2: Clean Set-In Stains From Carpet

One of the things we are asked a lot is about how to get old stains out of carpet. There are several methods, but our best advice is to pre-treat stains and then deep clean with a carpet cleaner.  Giving your carpet a little help before deep cleaning will go a long way towards removing stains. If you aren’t sure what kind of carpet stain you have, try an oxygen stain remover, like our Oxy Spot & Pre-Treat spray. Spray the stain and surrounding area about five minutes before you start carpet cleaning.

Step 3: Remove Furniture Dents In Carpet

Not sure how to get dents out of carpet? Here are some handy tips you can try to remove dents from carpet:

  • Place a few ice cubes in the dent and allow them to completely melt. Later, soak up excess water with a sponge or towel.
  • Use your fingers, a spoon or the edge of a coin to gently stroke dented area and bring the tufts of carpet more straight
  • For really deep dents, place a damp towel over the divot, then run your iron over the towel. Do NOT let the iron touch the carpet.

Step 4: Deep Clean Carpet By Renting A Carpet Cleaning Machine

If you are looking to refresh carpet, giving it a deep clean is the best thing to do.  You can rent an upright carpet cleaner for about $40 for 24 hours. It’s easy to rent and easy to use with professional-level carpet cleaning performance for your home! Learn more about our machines here and use our store locator to find a rental location near you!

Carpet Care Tips: Remove Odors From Carpet

Now that your carpet is much cleaner, let’s keep it that way! Carpeting is expensive and not easy to replace. It can and should last for a long time, but maintenance is key. Here are some carpet cleaning tips:

  1. Vacuum carpet once a week or more if you have pets to prevent excess hair from collecting on your carpets.
  2. Spot clean spills right away. Keep some Oxy Spot + Pretreat on hand to help! When you clean stains, clean from the outside of the stain in to minimize spreading. Also, blot the stain, don’t scrub! This will help keep your carpet from getting fuzzy.
  3. Add welcome mats by your doors to trap dirt before it gets on carpets in the main parts of your home.
  4. Remove your shoes before walking inside your home.
  5. Consider adding area rugs in high traffic areas throughout your home that have carpeting to avoid matting and carpet damage.
  6. Rearrange furniture every now and then to change the flow of walk patterns through your home and reduce carpet wear.
  7. Deep clean carpets every three to six months with an upright carpet cleaner to keep carpets clean and refreshed.

Let Jar Lids Do The Heavy Lifting For You

There’s a certain sense of accomplishment that comes from cleaning your house—dusting off the dirt of everyday life and starting fresh. But we all know there are certain spots that don’t get the love they deserve. It’s nobody’s fault, really. After all, even the most determined housekeeper has trouble lifting that 10-ton sleeper-sofa to clean the carpet underneath, with or without help.

So, how do you get to those hard-to-reach places to make them as clean as the rest of your house without ruining your furniture, carpet or back?

There’s actually a very simple solution that’s been lurking in your pantry or fridge this whole time: jar lids. With just a twist, jars of olives, pickles and salsa become handy tools in your quest for cleaner carpets.

By placing a jar lid (metal side down) under each leg of the furniture you’re moving, you can easily push it aside. The smooth surface of the lid slides across almost any carpet while protecting it from sharp edges and potential snags. The metal lid is rigid enough to help support the weight of your furniture and keep it from digging into the carpet. It also helps the furniture slide over any impressions left in the carpet from furniture that’s been sitting in the same spot for a while.

BONUS TIP from the pros at BISSELL® by Rug Doctor®: Be sure to use jar lids that are in good shape. A lid with a punctured or nicked surface could leave a rust stain if you’ve placed your furniture on carpet that’s still damp from cleaning.

Credit for this simple, yet effective, carpet cleaning hack goes out to Wendy Edwards via her Designed to Dwell blog (https://designedtodwell.blogspot.com/2011/08/moving-furniture-with-ease.html).

Give it a try and get your entire carpet as clean as it can be.
